In Memoriam – Nahum and Nava Sharfman

This is my original post:

I just heard the horrible news – Nahum and Nava Sharfman were killed in a plane crash in Greece. Nahum was an inspiration to me from the day I met him 25 years ago. First and foremost, he was a real mentch, in every sense of the word.

And in the spirit of Yom HaAtzmaut – I consider Nahum one of the founders of the country.

He brought world class standards to National Semiconductor’s Herzliya Design Center, standards which are in a large way responsible for Israel’s high tech leadership position.ย  His goal was nothing short of creating the “Best Design Center in the Universe”.

As founder of shopping.com he created Israel’s most successful consumer internet site and will remain an inspiration to all entrepreneurs who had the honor of knowing him.

May his spirit live on in the lives of thousands of people whose lives were touched by him.

    I knew Nahum at National in the 80s where he hired and managed me. I think of him often as he set the gold standard for getting the most out of his workers by treating them as valued human beings with much to contribute. He’ll be missed.

    This loss is a great loss to the family, as well as the extended circle of friends and business associates. Over the years enjoyed Nahum as a manager, a friend and a client of my business. All handled with that famous Nahum smile and concern for doing well all around. It is said that he who is concerned for generations educates people, and Nahum surely falls into this category – but was never shy to learn new things and move them forward diligently. My wife and I are going to miss both him and Nava – their memories will inspire us for a better future for many years to come.

    I still remember July 20, 1980, when I became an employee at the small company called National Semiconductor and was told by David Ashkenazi that my new boss will be the young engineer who started just a few days before me, Nahum Sharfman. He was my first boss ever, and to the best of my knowledge I was the first person who ever reported to him. I take great pride in being the first subordinate of such a great man. I have many memories from him, but the one that comes up strongest was when he came to me one day in the early 80s, when we were moving everyone from VMS to Unix, and he asked me “How can anyone be serious about an OS in which to view a file you need to say “hatulim” (cat)”.

    More recently he tried to convince me to join him in a triathlon, and I now regret not having taken him on this offer. I will miss him.

    This is such a sad news and terrible loss. I met Nahum several times and he was brilliant, kind, funny and discrete. I was always amazed this person that created 2 majors hits in Israel remained so behind the scene.

    I didn’t know Nahum and Nava all that well as most people here. Nahum was already the manager of NSTA when I joined. Fresh from the Technion, I was shivering like a young chick from the new challenge of working in such a great place. And there was this tall, tough-looking, stocky man with a wide, warm smile. His first words to me which I’ll never forget were: “Welcome aboard.”
    Another incident that is stuck in my memory is when I returned from Miluim, which I was supposed to do in the West Bank, but I chose to spend in Kele 6. I was a little concerned of “what people at National would say,” and especially the great Nahum. To this day, I don’t know what he really thought about the political situation, because some people with Yavne’el roots could actually be pretty nervous. And he always looked so touch. But when I walked in, he greeted me with words which are burnt in my memory: “Don’t worry, you are among friends here.” This was such a relief. To me, Nahum was an example of the ultimate Tzabar, a perfect combination of talent, wisdom, determination which shows by his posture, but which really encapsulates a sensitive, human spirit inside. It is hard to write these sentences in the Past form.

    I came this week for a short visit and I thought I could make it to the funeral, but unfortunately it’s postponed and I have to fly back. Sorry that I wont meet all of you ex-employees of National. This place was to me the great school of chip design, and later I heard the same from so many people. It set the standards to dozens companies. The descendants of National are now spread all over the hi-tech industry, representing the proficiency and good spirit of what used to be National Semiconductor. Nahum has a major part in all this.
    May Nava and Nahum rest in peace.

    The funeral was yesterday. Speakers from all aspects of Nahum and Nava’s life. Family, friends, charities, etc.

    It is a tribute to Nahum and the NSTA team that such strong feelings exist between people who worked together, years ago.

    We need to figure out (in time) how to channel all of this energy. This is a unique group – carefully selected and nurtured. We share this DNA that makes us a “family”

    During the last week I followed the mails in a mailing list of National Semi-Conductor Herzelia veterans. I must say I’m proud to be part of this group, with all the caring and respect shown in it. If those are Nahum friends, then we can all know what a man Nahum was.

      They say “people come into our life for a reason, a season or a lifetime. Some people are in our life for a REASON to meet a need of ours, to assist through a difficulty or provide with guidance and support. Some people come into our life for a SEASON, because our turn has come to share, grow or learn. They may bring an experience of peace or excitement, or make us laugh. They may teach us something we don’t know or have never done, and they usually give us an unbelievable amount of joy. LIFETIME relationships teach us lifetime lessons, things we can build upon as solid foundations for our lives. If we are up to it, we will put what we have learned to use in all areas in our life”.

      Nahum and Nava, both together and each in his and her own right came into my life several times for a reason and for several seasons. The quality of those could compare to a lifetime. Each of them was a role model for all I consider meaningful in life:

      It’s about care and support, enthusiasm and creativity; about the ability to look at difficulties as challenges and create something new. It’s about embracing life and experiencing it fully; about the beauty and abundance we create and spread around us. It’s about connecting with people in the deep sense of the word, beeing able to see the value and greatness in each one, sometimes before he can realize it himself.

      As I stood there in the funeral, listening and looking at their wonderful family and friends, I have realized that in this fragile world, where nothing stays the way it is, where things like health and wealth come and go, where life-time projects or creations, failures or successes are remembered or forgotten, if there is anything which really lingers on, which is indestructible, it is the love we leave behind when we are gone.

      I am grateful for the privilege of getting to know them and the gift of their friendship.

      Joining in 1988 National in Germany and soon working with the team in NSTA I understand now, after so many years, who was the person who gave this spirit to this company in Herzlia. Looking back in my work so fare I never want to miss this personal experience or better relationship working with the team in NSTA and having been part of the family as mentioned above.
